Just like wine and cheese, we have been teaming up with our kindred creatives at The Make Lab for years.
We first met the make lab team 4 to 5 years ago, and the only thing better than having the joy of calling them friends, is that we get to work together on projects together. We decided to ask this quirky bunch a few questions to give us some insights into the creative world of laser cutting.
Q: What inspired you to go into the laser cut industry?
A: we started off by wanting to make laser cut items to sell in various markets. In the process, we saw that there was no facility for small business to access laser cutting services. That’s when we thought we could join the market by offering laser cutting services to a niche design and creative market.
Q: What is your favorite Make Lab + Peep Designs collaboration so far?
A: Our favorite one so far is the screen printed timber that peep design did up for us last year.
Q: What is your favorite project in make lab history?
A: We really enjoyed being part of the installation “six” that we did a few years back. It was a tough project to embark on but the outcomes were fantastic! we were given 6 days to design and build this pavilion, it has 1000+ distinct triangular faces held together but 5000 cable ties. we had heaps of fun.
Q: Which designer are you inspired by at the moment?
A: Its hard to single out particular designers that we draw inspiration from. being a business that has very little precedence, we have to work a lot of things out via first principles. If i had to point out one designer that we are big fans off, it would be architects, Gramazio & Kohler(www.gramaziokohler.com/) they employ nes technlogies in their work to value add to the industry. All their experiments are very forward thinking yet very practical in execution.
Q: What is your go to source for inspiration?
A: We spend a lot of time on design blogs, Dezeen would be the main one. we also look at local design blogs like “the design files”. Otherwise, we borrow details by referencing other industries. We’re big advocates for cross-polinating across different industries.
Q: What is your favorite adobe shortcuts?
A: That’s such a geeky question but yes we do have a favorite, its “create outlines”. Great little tool when you have many intersecting shapes and would like to create outlines. Viva la geek!
Q: So weddings!
A: Weddings bring out the best in the couples and their families. We want to continually add to that and be part of the process where we see the best sides of everyone.
Q: Who would be your dream client to work with?
A: Lets think local, We’d like to supply Salvatore malatesta from St Ali group with one of our “C for Cone” coffee pour over stands. Check it out at http://www.themakelab.com/product/c-for-one. We also heard of some Aussies potentially going to Mars. We’d love for them to start a human colony with one of our rocket lamps! http://www.themakelab.com/product/apollo-lamp. We wont mind working with them too! Wont’ hurt to dream!
